I worked at dot-com for a year. I'm sick of doing web development (VB/COM/MTS/ASP). What are the prospects for non-web related jobs in Java? Are people looking for help with larger scale java based systems, components, and APIs?

Hell yes! Client server systems, stand alone applications, open APIs, embedded, etc are all going strong. There are even some companies doing applet work. I personally, have been doing Java for 5 years, and have never created a single webpage in Java. At most, I created a couple web pages to house Java applets, but that was back in '96.
The need for competant programmers in these areas is still strong, despite all the bad news about the economy. However, the usually require people to have prior experience. Ex-JSP/ASP guys are a dime a dozen.
