Start here

http://www.sun.com/training/catalog/courses/CX-310-055.xml

Get the SCJP 5 study guide written by Kathy sierra and Bert bates.

Practice lots. There is no specific count to keep up to. If you feel confident then you should go for it

Hi Roopa Bangaru welcome to Javaranch,

If you are a beginner I would suggest to read the Head First Java book first. Its really good for beginners.
Also check the Javaranch SCJP faq.

Hope this helps

Hi ,

I just wanted to know how many hours need to be dedicated for passing SCJP in 1 month for a beginner , i have a tight schedule and based on the suggestion you provide , I can plan my time for the test.
Some friends told me its impossible to pass SCJP in 1 month expecially if we are a beginner.. i am loosing hopes.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Even I am planning to give SCJP after a month or so, but I had given a month or so before. I think, one month for beginner is not sufficient. But, nothing is impossible if you are willing to work hard.

Hi,

What do you mean by the term Beginner.
Are you a beginner for Java or for Programming as a whole.

You, said you are currently working somewhere. What is that job like. Are you working in the software domain.
If your answer is yes, if you are already in touch with some basic software programming language like C or C++ or Pascal or Basic ..etc.
Then I promise you, One month is more than enough for Passing Java certification.
Just Dedicate 2 hours a day for practising programming and 1 hour a day for theory. And i think you will fly out with bright colours in the exam.

..
Well well, if you are completely new to programming.
Then, I dont find good news for you. as you say you need to work and then find time to study for the exam.
Programming is an art. It comes by experience. Not by reading thousand pages. So only your IQ will decide the time necessary for passing the exam.

Any how, You need more help or have any specific questions, feel free to write to me.

Warm Regards ,
Nataraju Gaganam.

Hi,

I work .. not into software ,and I hve an oppurtunity in my company to move to Java development and they are looking for certified people.. i know a bit or programming but i feel i have to start from scratch.

I have seen some people writing abt mock exams ,can i have some websites which have mock exams which can be practiced.

I see most of them are paid courses... dont we have any mock exams for free.

Thnks in advance

That page is horribly outdated, and we should remove it. The current list is at http://faq.javaranch.com/java/ScjpMockTests

Can someone suggest a good book for SCJP prep ... I read somewhere that Kathy Sierra book is enough and in some places that its not a good enough book for the exam ... Also the Khalid Mughal book is suggested in some places and some places it is said it is tougher than SCJP ... confusing !!!

I would suggest that you read a java programming book first(i reccomend java complete reference ch 1-19)
after you have done that go for kathy's book
they have 2 mock tests as well which are very close to the actual test
nothing is impossible

Roopa K&B book is good no doubt. But if you are new and read it without base then it is useless because it is for people who already have basic java knowledge. So go for Head First Java first and then K&B

Your friends are correct. I speak from over 10 years of observation of people studying for this exam (see my comments on many other discussions within this forum)

Too many topics are covered in scjp. Absorbing it all in a month may be very difficult.

In the past Sun has recommended 6 months of study. It may be possible to do it in less time than that, but the time is almost always measured in months not weeks. I was recently discussing industry certification exams with a training organisation and they were telling me how the SCJP has one of the lower pass rates by contrast with most other exams as it is quite difficult.

It is not the most difficult of the industry certifications, just one of the more difficult ones. Having said that the issue is not innate complexity, it is more that there is a lot to cover so any reasonably intelligent person can pass it provided they study hard enough and give themselves a reasonable amount of time.

Thank You Marcus .. I am planning to take up SCJP 1.4 as of now .. Because that is still used widely in the industry (I suppose) ...

In my opinion, an SCJP 5 or 6 certificate would be more valuable than an SCJP 1.4 certificate.

Note that Java 1.4 is already two versions behind the current version. Why would you want to do an exam for such an old version?

If you had click on the link for the rancher, whom you asked this question, you would have noticed that the first post was on June 2, 2008, and the last post was on June 3, 2008.

I think that it is safe to assume that Roopa may not see your question.
