Hello everybody,

I am new to javaranch so please excuse any mistakes. I am a fresher from UTRGTU, Bhopal. I have been placed in TCS and my joining dates are expected to be in December 2008. So I have loads of time (nearly 5 months). I have some questions please reply to them:

1) How much time should I schedule for SCJP 5. I am Intermediate in Java and quite good at programming.

2) Is it possible to go for SCJD too in this time?

3) Either with SCJP or SCJD, should I go woth any XML certification or UML certification or both. Please suggest me some good certifications and expected time required for them too. I am comfortable with bot XML and UML.

Will be waiting for your replies guys.

Its good to see that you want to spend this time preparing for an exam. It should take you about 3 months or less to pass the SCJP. You can choose to pass other certifications after that if you choose to. You can choose the SCJP 6 exam which is the most recent right now

Thanks for your reply John. So I should not dream for SCJD yet. So XML or UML certifications are good to go with SCJP or not? please reply.

One thing at a time, the SCJP is a pre-requisite for the SCJD exam.

As marcus says, the SCJP is a pre requisite. The SCJD will also take longer to complete (that depends really) since you will have to submit a program.

The XML certifications are more daunting than they actually look. I am not sure about the UML certifications.

Thanks guys. So I will keep my focus on SCJP now.

Also, what to refer for practicing(coding), I have been using K&B for sometime now but no separate problems are given for coding practice. Where can I found problems which may help in understanding Exam Objectives better? I have coded much in Java but never took care of precise things explained in K&B. Any suggestions?? Thanks

You have made an excellent start by using K&B. I recommend writing small programs to illustrate each point you are covering, e.g. 5 to 10 line programs, compile and run them, change them and see what happens. Most people learn by doing not by reading.
