I once worked on the mainframe for at lease five years, programmed in Fortran and used various software packages. I became interested in internet technology about one and half years ago. I first learned HTML, Java Script, Perl, VBScript, etc. and then found the beauty of Java about this time last year. My course work includes Java2, Servlets, and JSP. I am SCJP2 and currently working very hard on learning J2EE and preparing for the WebLogic6.0 certification exam. I have done several school projects; however, I do not have hand-on commercial experience in Java. I recently got a job offer as a Java Programmer Analyst from a University (I was told that I am expected to program in Java, Servlets and JSPs). The University is undertaking a research on examining and analyzing human reactions to chaotic situations. I think that my understanding of statistical modelling and analyses rather than my knowledge in Java helped me to get the job. My question is if this opportunity is going to serve as a reasonably good start as a Java programmer. I want to launch a career in the IT field. Do you think that I may get side tracked on this job? I need your advice.

Are you kidding? It sounds like a great opportunity. As you know, the market is very tight right now. Besides, if you like the university atmosphere, you're golden.
