Valid parameter type of NumberFormat's format()

Taken from Whizlab and i've made a little modifications :

import java.text.*;
import java.util.*;
 
class Locale2
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
NumberFormat nfi = NumberFormat.getInstance(Locale.ITALY);

NumberFormat nfd = NumberFormat.getInstance();

try
{
Number n = nfi.parse("123");

String str = nfd.format(n); //Line 16

System.out.println(str);
}
catch(ParseException pe)
{
}
}
}

I expect compiler error at line 16, because java docs tells that the valid parameter of NumberFormat's format() is of type long or double, not a Number.

Are you sure of it? I saw 7 overriden methods for format :-) Including one with Object parameter.
