1.2's life has ended already

1.4's life is about to end

1.5 and 1.6 are the big deal....frankly speaking I don't know myself....I was also going to ask the same question very soon between 5.0 and 6.0....

If you do a poll on javaranch I think you will get an almost evenly distributed reply the question is more of a personal choice rather than one that can be exactly answered.. best would be for you to do some research and find out yourself...
and assuming you want to give SCJP I would recommend 1.6 cause its the latest..

But Java 1.4 is a quite old version of Java, so an SCJP 1.4 certificate will be worth less than an SCJP 1.5 or 1.6 certificate. I'd recommend you do the newest version of SCJP (currently version 1.6, about Java 6).

hello
I think you should either go for scjp5.0 or 6.0 . There is not much difference in their courses but choose according to your capability becuse passing % in 6.0 is 65% and for 5.0 its 59%.So firstly think then decide.

Just took the SCJP 6. I never took the 5 exam, but used two SCJP5 books to study from. I'm used to practice tests being harder than the real thing, but I thought the practice tests were actually easier.

The main reason is that I would say about 25% of the test was APIs and 25% was threading. I don't know what I was expecting, but most of the practice tests were focused much more on the language than specific APIs. The threading questions on the real thing were much harder than the practice exams.

I would say that Sun's intention is that the 5 exam and the 6 exam are equally challenging. My personal perspective is that, given the slightly different pass percentage, the two exams are very similar in difficulty.

Given that, I'd recommend taking the 6 exam - simply because you get the "latest and greatest" and it shouldn't take any more effort to pass than the 5 exam would.

hth,

Bert

p.s. From the "fox in the chicken coop" dept. As I've mentioned before, this isn't about selling books If you already have the SCJP 5 book I see NO REASON for you to get the SCJP 6 book - even if you're going to take the SCJP 6 exam. Apart from some corrections, some new mock questions, and a few fairly small new topics the two books are the same! Unless you're rich, I think there isn't much value in having both books. On the other hand, if you are thinking about buying one of those books for the first time, I would definitely recommend the SCJP 6 book.

I was suppose to take 1.4 because it was easier (at that time I was only concerned in getting an SCJP cert), but I thought that if I was gonna study anyway then why not study for the harder and latest version, so I eventually took 1.5.

Answering whizlabs 1.4 was pretty easy. Then i tried whizlabs 1.5 and found out it was far more difficult than the 1.4 questions. In 1.4 I could easily score 80%-90%, but in 1.5 I was getting 60%-75%.

In my opinion I think the 1.4 exam should be deprecated. its like "the easy version of SCJP", why not make everyone take the harder version?
