Welcome to JavaRanch.

There are many books about Java. Head First Java is a good one.

For more information about SCJP, see the JavaRanch SCJP FAQ.

Please don't write in ALL CAPITALS, it looks as if you are SHOUTING.

Start with Complete Reference to get your basics in Java. As you have a background in C/C++ that will help.
Initially you will start comparing C++ with Java as some concept are similar..
But latter if you plan for any certification do go through Kathy Sierra that clear many concepts in detail.

Given your background in C++, you might find Eckel's Thinking in Java to be a good fit.

khalid mughal is not suitable for beginners. As far as SCJP is concerned, read K&B and then you can go for Khalid Mughal.....It will definitely add some concepts and traps to your knowledge...
