Well 1.5 is far ahead of 1.4. It has many advanced topics such as Generics and I/O which are not in 1.4. 1.6 and 1.5 are mostly the same...

In terms of Books, Kathy Sierra is better for beginners.

Which one should you take....Everyone here will say 1.5 or 1.6. But I myself am confused. I am confused in generics and I am planning to give SCWCD as soon as possible so I am also confused between 1.4 and 1.6. If you can understand I/O and Generics then definitely you should go for 1.5 or 1.6...

I would do 1.6. For 1.6, it has Console, NavigableMaps, NavigableSorts are extremely simple and can be picked up in a few hours. For 1.5, along with 1.6, it has generics, which is a bit annoying at first, but if you understand the concept of C++ templates, it's not that.

I would recommend Kathy Sierra.
