HELLO,ranchers.....!!
i bought the scjp 5 voucher,n planning to give exam in november or december...
but i realised one thing that every one here is quite experienced in java....and working somewhere in some company on java....
but thats not the case with me....i am engineering student(computer science,3rd year).....
and i think scjp will surely attack on a few concepts which only an experienced guy can answer...!!
so, ranchers suggest me....how should i fill my this gap between you guys and me...!!
and one more thing....i am doin complete reference, herbert shildth...for full java comfort level.....however i didnt got any complex, sophisticated codes there,as the real exam do have..........!!
from no where i am getting drag and drop questions....please tell what are these questions and what we have to do in that..!!

Hi, Himanshu!
Welcome to Java Ranch!!
  • It is good that you are planning to give SCJP 5.0 while your doing engineering.

  • It is not necessary that you should have job experience to undergo SCJP.
You should practice a lot of coding and undergo mocks to undergo SCJP.
It is true "SCJP will surely attack on few concepts". But you are an experienced guy once you have a practice.Practice,Practice, and practice a lot(of codes,mocks..).
There are certain study guides from Java Champions like Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates who are also the moderators of JavaRanch.
You can get a helping hand from JavaRanchers

    Hello himanshu,
It really good you are thinking about certification and this certification will sure help you differentiate your self with other fresher. I also did my Cisco certification in Collage time and though out my carrier it help me a lot.
SCJP having really good content. just need to understand proper concept.it is not hard but you have to dedicated to it and work hard. if you are fresh then only need will be there you must have to focus on practical hands on. do not read but read and do your self should be you key to success..

And go though as possible as mock exam but after reading that objective and some hands on. All ranchers are here to help you out.

I can suggest you one more thing. Although hands on practice is not a pre-requisite for SCJP, you may take up any open source project in any open source site and contribute to it. This way you would have real experience on Java and you would understand the concepts better.
You would also have an extra project to put in your resume, which you again add more weight to your resume along with a certification. That you would really help you in your placements.
Some recruiters really appreciate if you go out the way to do projects rather than your college course requirements. This really shows that you have the willingness to learn and implement things.
All the best for your career.

Very good advise. It is much better when you have theoretical knowledge and practical experience go hand in hand.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
