[ SecretKey ] Why is there no need for a password ?

Hi,
I've used the JCE to generate a DES SecretKey.
However the API doesn't seem to need a password.
I thought all symmetric ciphers need a password ?
Maybe I do not understand the difference between a
cipher and a key ! Can someone explain ? My code to
generate the key is below (I do not know yet how to
add it to the keystore..coming soon):

Thanks
Pho
