Java Speech Synthesizer

I am working with an application that uses the javax.speech.synthesis.Synthesizer interface to speak out loud. Sometimes the speech stops. There is no exception and when I monitor the code that calls the speak() method of synthesizer, there doesn't appear to be any difference to when it was working. It's like it has been switched to mute but nothing else changes.
Has anyone got any ideas as to why this might happen; or where I might search to find out more information?
