Java Media Framework

Recently I began playing around with some audio stuff, mostly just for fun. I found the Java Media Framework, and found that it looked pretty stale in terms of maintenance. The latest book on it is nearing four years old, and the docs are copyright 1999 as well. Is the javax.sound.sampled.* package intended to replace the JMF? (This would seemingly involve a sacrifice of some functionality, but it may not be important functionality for many.)
Is anybody doing anything with real-time digital audio in Java these days?
