I have been looking at MBeans and the JMX API but I haven't found any explanation as to what is happening under the covers with Notifications.
I would like to know what method/technology is being used to implement notifications. Is it JMS?

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
