Guys,
I am new to software. I am a mechanical engineer and would like to change to software. I have started with learning c++ and now Java plan to give Cert in this month. Can you please advice what else should I learn to be ready for the next wave of hiring.

How about writing programs and/or applets (they both use Java code) and publishing them on the public Web including source code?
They don't have to be really useful, just show that you can write Java code and that you are willing for others to see the source code. This will force you to be more professional even before having a real job, right?
