Hi,
Somewhat depressing news today in the register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25380.html

Oracle, Win NT, Visual Basic and Java were each mentioned in more than 10,000 ads. However, demand for Java skills has slipped markedly from 40,681 mentions in Q1 2001 to 14,566, a decline of 64 per cent.

Ok so 14566 job postings is a *lot*. Ive been looking on the more www.jobserve.com for Java programming roles in my area lately. A lot of adverts are just duplicates from different agencies for the same position.
Basically I dont think now is a good time to look java work in the UK... fortunately Im already employed with another company so Im still getting a wage
Its my hope though that next year when the market picks up, companies will be looking to build new systems, and that a good proportion of these systems will be written in Java. Maybe then I'll go looking for work!
Cheers,
Mark

Oh bummer, i just studied to take the SCJP on the assumption that after i would start job hunting in London for a java job, but i think i will stay where i am and get some experience and buff up the CV some more instead.
Any idea as to why the sudden decline has hit Java more than other languages, i assume that java has been used to replace older systems and with IT cutbacks these are put on the backburner instead, hopefully that should lead to a surge next year

There are plenty of jobs in london... but you need to focus on the banking sector.

Simon do you have any good tips on where to find them?? I used to work as a trader and trader support and have my SFA Futures & Options as well as currently working in a broking house doing research and programming so i should be qualified to work in this sector.
If you could point out any good agencies it would be much appreciated.
Also apart from my java do you recommend any other areas of programming that would be useful when trying to get a job / get ahead in working in London??
Thanks
