Hi all, guys i was intrested to know if there is an API to convert and audio data to text data using java? i have looked at the java Speech API but i'm not sure of what it does.as i understood it converts text into audio data. and if there is an API the converts audio data to text data in java ,does it support localization like Arabic language?
Java Speech has two parts: speech synthesis (i.e., generation) and speech recognition (which is what you want). Sun only provides the interfaces, but no actual implementation. There are a number of implementations for synthesis, but precious few for recognition. And those that do recognition are either commercial, or simply attempt voice-control of applications (which means recognizing very short phrases, not full sentences). So I'm afraid what you ask does not exist or is very expensive. Speech-to-Text is a very hard problem, and it's unlikely that anything will come out as open source. A listing of some existing projects and products can be found here.

don't know.i'm so confused about this.i want to manipulate a DB over the phone line and to detect DTMF tones ,so i saw that VoiceXML can give me that capability and saw that there is a VoiceXML interpreter in java called JVoiceXML which supports other java API's like JSAPI.anyway what should i be using to output a speech to the end user on the phone line and to take input from the end-user? i will be using JVoiceXML first to interpret my VoiceXML documents then JSAPI ,or Java Sound API ? I'm using the RXTX API for communicating with my modem. really i'm so confused about this as i don't know where am i heading at ,so i would be gratefull for any help. Regards, Mahmoud Hadad
