Hmm, interesting, why are most of us working for corporations then?
Yeah, you can create your own software. Let's just start with first thing: idea. Do you know what you want to create?
Some other questions you might ask:
1. Is there economical feasibility for it?
2. Is there market?
3. Will someone need it and (more importantly) buy it?
4. What is you plan as far as getting resources (designers, developers, QA, salesmen) and financing?
If you have all of the above, and you can estimate marlet in $Millions, you might even get Venture Capital support.
Otherwise, I am not sure you'll get people on board. Although 3-4 of you can get together and hammer eCommerce site, or portal of some sort, and try to go about making difficult buck online. Be advised, that you better be darn good at it, or your effort will go nowhere.
Good Luck

Also, I think the days where you could get serious VC money just for having an idea are gone. At the very least you'll need to have built a solid beta of the thing you want to market; even better would be to have a released product that you had successfully sold to somebody.

I agree with Reid, you can't get money with just a pedigree and idea.
However, my sources indicate that there's still plenty of VC money to go around. They've been very stringent lately, scared to invest. It's gotten to the point that investors are starting to demand their money back--VC's hate that! From what I've seen, there's some backlog of money waiting to be spent.

You need VC finance if you are developing your own product or try to implement your own Idea which needs big finance , but if you take some small projects from the market and do it with your three or four unemployed friends then you dont need a large setup or big finance small setup can work, In fact me and some of my friends have done this before we have taken some small web development project and used to do it at our home.

Yes Sameer, that's exactly I mean,
It is said, JavaRach is thinking using "Jive" to run this discussion forum. "Jive" started as few friends wrote a program, sell to who wants, then the program getting better and more people buy...., well some is my guessing.
OK, Sameer, would you tell us more, how you and your friends did?

Me and few of my friends started working together 2 years back. Actually one of my friend was working on a mobile phone (Service provider) company, and his company wants to develop a website at cheaper cost, at that time as we were not getting anything I offered him that me and friends can do that at very cheap rate, so we did that project and after that we have taken many projects on web development until we all got the job.

I know somebody got laid off, and his atatus (H-1) in US was in danger. He started a training company with several friends, with cheap computers and with low cost renting classrooms since they were empty due to Company shutdown. Now, he sponsor his own greencard since he is the CEO, He also sponsor other H-1's.
