The salaryExpert sounds good, but I'm looking for a more "IT oriented" doc.
With this one, it's hard to make the difference between a cobol programmeur and a EJB expert !!

I am skeptical of salary calculators and surveys for the following reasons:
1) Most hiring managers haven't a clue about which programmers are competant, and which aren't, and consequently pay is only loosely correlated to ability.
2) Most people (both those who make these surveys and those who fill them out) don't understand the difference between the different jobs, e.g. programmer level II, system analyst level III, applications programer II, etc.
3) The salary surveys are not even close to scientific. This creates a bias in the results.
4) The salary calculators are put out by people with a vested interest, e.g. during the boom, recruiters would put out calculators, if those calculators were biased high, it would encourage people to change jobs, and give the recruiters more business.

I agree with you Mark.
So why don't we start our own salary survey on the JavaRanch.
I mean, most (all) of us are IT specialists.
We know our job, and our real salary.
So we could be able to have a trend of the salary rate for each town in the world.....

Frank, I was thinking about an anonymous salary survey for JavaRanchers, and hosted by the JR.
