writeObject to a cookie

This is my first time posting into this forum.
I'm currently in a Servlet env, and I need to serialise a Serialisable class....and then save that serialised object as String so that I can save it as a Cookie value.
Can someone please give some sample code on how to serialised an object without using FileOutputStream?
Thank you.
