Hi,
I am working with an MNC in India for last three years. Now I have got the permanent immigration papers for CANADA, and am planning to goto Toronto. Before leaving from here I want to enquire about the job scene in Toronto for professional like me, having 3.5 years of experience in JAVA. Am working on EJB, weblogic and XML right now. I am also certified in Java and XML.

I am moving this to the Job Discussions forum. It is more appropriate there.

I'm pretty sure that there is java in Canada, otherwise I'm living in a dream. I live in the Megapolitan area of Thunder Bay ( Northwestern Ontario ) and we use java here too( but watch out for the Polar Bears, they'll eat your CPU or press shift lock on your keyboard when your not paying attention )!! Anyways, like everywhere else, jobs are hard to come by here. There is a large pool of educated graduates being pumped out of a generally good higher education system. This means lots of competition and lower wages. But, they are out there...

G Vanin, Change your information source.
Don't worry Aman, there are java jobs in Canada.
Here is a sample.
Of course, you have to be aware it is not paradise on earth. Finding a job is harder it was a few years ago.

Looking for an IT job in Canada? The best place to look would obviously be "Canada's Biggest Job Site":

Hi, Aman,
I am really very worried to ask you why can't you first agree about job there and then move?
I am also in a foreign country and have been caught by recent too fast changes in pictures in local labor market and surprises over the ocean will be too many.
For ex., here, in Portugal, I maintain on my table magazines from December, 2001 and December, 2002. The titles of the former tells "The Portuguese Economy Suffocates without More Immigrant Hands", "Enterprises Pay for Those Who Arrange Them Workers", "Employer Personally Went to Moldavia To Bring Back a Van with Working Hands" and the letter are quite different, just guess...
To my experience the changes are too unexpected and people frequently think by yesterday's mentality and/or experience.

Aman :
The job market in Toronto is quite good for Java, especially for people like you as I was told by a few friends who live there. Check out www.monster.ca and www.jobboom.ca and www.workopolis.ca and htsearch.com
Good luck.

Hi Aman !
Don't go by the monster.ca and workopolis jobs.An interesting thing about workopolis is that u would find the same job posted after 6-7 days again. I have 3 yrs exp. and completed SCWCD 4 months back(had done SCJP2 2 years back) but for the past one and half year haven't received any worthwhile interview(had received 2-3 calls but skill sets were for everything under the sky).I have talked to other java professionals also and same feedback comes. So, stay there till the scene gets better and try extension in VISA if possible.
I am talking about Toronto area.

I am a developer with more than five years of
Java/J2EE/C++ and Unix experience with the
required certifications.
I also hold an MS in CIS from a regular State
university in the US.
I recently got my PR in Canada and my questions
regarding moving to Canada are as follows:
- How long would it roughly take to find a job
given my background?
- How is the pay there as compared to US?
- Is Toronto really as bad as the US with respect to the job scene, or is it even worse ?
I am sure that there would a lot of
professionals thinking of moving to
Canada considering the situation in the US.
I would love to see an active discussion on
this topic.

I agree with Ajay. I hold certifications as well. I worked in U.S for 5 years. I landed in Canada last october. Still looking for job. Did receive a couple of interviews, I could not take the offer because of salary or location. In www.eagleonline.com, search for resources, you can see a lot of experienced professionals (10+ years) looking for an assignment. I wish, I knew about the job market before I landed here. Its a rough time alright ! Just have to knock harder till someone notices you. You can rely on search engines, but most say its still a hidden job market. If you have a good network, then you may have a very positive job hunting experience to share. I am talking about Ontario. I am not sure how job market is in other provinces.

Living in UK at the moment but have looked for Java position in canada before without luck. Look like Java is not shining over there.

Thank you, Duc Lai, but you would do to check the thread date: read this FAQ before posting on 6-year old threads
