What words, names, and acronyms are part of our industry? Some examples include: methodology, CASE, ERP, use case, QA, etc. Add your own terms and definitions.

Hi,
What's about SQE? Software Quality Engineer should be the major player in the outsourcing/offshoring scenario. QA is only a part of the quality process team.

Try "Involuntary Resource Action"--this happens when the company selects you for layoff in a nice way

Or RIF (Reduction in Force). Though this term isn't confined to our field of course....
Specific to Management Consultantcy: RIF (Reduction In Farce) - Partner payoffs.

SLA - Service Level Agreement is one term that I am being reminded about recently. (Clients are a lot more 'demanding' lately!)

A statement of work is a kind of preliminary agreement between a client company and the service provider setting out the nature, purpose and extent of the service to be provided and the rights, responsibilities of each party to the agreement.I have seen it used in the consulting industry, i believe it will be used in other service industries as well, perhaps with a different terminlology

Um, while appreciate responses, how about some actual terms, and not just sarcastic phrases (which would make an interesting thread in its own right).

Wow, that's the type of stuff I'm looking for. Thanks Chris.
A few questions and clarifications...
DOU - this is just like a high level document proceeding a contract?
TOI - is just a term, activity, or milestone and the term itself, in general, doesn't refer to a particular means, right?
SDLC - um, actually I don't know what this is; looks very similar to SLOC (Source Lines of Code)

TOI (Transfer of Information)
When somebody replaces you in a work, you need to provide him/her, all the releavent information he might need to carry on the work you were doing.
It is one of the activities I hate the most

No. SDLC stands for Software Development Life Cycle, which includes the various stages of software development (like analysis, design, implementation, testing etc)

MTBF - MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURE
(Not sure what that's for - a progress report
- a project life-cycle)

This refers to programmer productivity of a certain kind?
This is time-sensitive information of course.
Then there is of course the specialty lexicon of a large management
consultantcy, in which the word 'Farce' often substitutes for Failure.
Especially when referring to Partners. Or (more like) those Who Would Be
Partner.
So RIF turns into 'Reduction in Farce' (when a partner allows him/herself to be renumerately nudged out) and Mean Time Between Farce(s) when Someone On The Way Up does the architecture for a project.

HS,
These are more Project Management specific though (which is okay!). In that case, you can add: Gantt Chart, Baseline...umm...let me go grab my PM book....better yet, let me go grab my PM!
Mark,
DOU - the document a group gives another group for support (ie, development hands a project over to technical support or IT)
TOI - usually person to person transfer of project specific knowledge.

I quite like Reduction In Farce . If it isn't already it should be adopted !
