Jsp can be compiled during
(got these from specs)
1.deployment time
2.at the first request to the jsp page
can somebody explain the first one?

1. deployment time
Use a < servlet > tag in your web-app to specify your JSP page and include its child element <load-on-startup>. In this case, your JSP page must be compiled at deployment time as the app server is required to load the servlet.
This is as per the Servlet 2.3 spec.
