Hi, I am looking for job from past 2 yrs. But I am not getting anywhere. I graduated in 2000 and worked for almost one year as web programmer. As I don't have much experience, I am not getting any job. What to do. The job market is so bad, even getting job in other field is also tough. Now I am thinking of doing my MS. Will it be of any help to find job. Any body has any advice. Hope the economy improves. Thanks

Hi Megha, It is tought in US. Since you have some bit experiences in Webbie, why don't you think of starting your own business. The starting capital is not very high comparing to other fields. If your communication skills are good as your technical skills, going for your own business is the most secure way in this treachous time. Starting out with very small investment in business cards and appropriate clothing, utilize your existence software and sell your knowledge to customers. Starting with a small mom&pop business, then gradually moving up. From user POV, Webbie is nothing more than glorified window graphic designer. One field of IT that does not have tying securily with the organization business. Unless the organization uses internet as the mean of business transaction. Regards, MCao

Maybe you have been trying to get jobs too senior for your qualifications? I agree it is a hard market right now but there are signs of improvement. While hires aren't yet up a lot the number of RIFs and bankruptcies are coming down reducing the number of experienced people entering the unemployment lines. Getting some extra education might be a good idea, but make sure it's related to your chosen field so you don't become someone who knows something about everything yet nothing about anything specific! Doing volunteer worl as a webdesigner for a charity or open source group would also be a good idea. Build up that resume a bit, prospective employers love to see some real life examples of your skills. As a webdesigner that's easier to do than as someone specialising in website backends or internal applications for customers, so use that one advantage you do have.
