Hi there, I'm a Naval Architect graduated, and last Jannuary I started an MSc Computing, in the UK. I had been programming around three years in C, just cause I love programming. In the MSc course I've done mainly Java, and my project is about programming for PDAs. By the time the project is over, I'll have a fully working application running on a Pocket PC (as soon as they've got a JVM). My question is, how can I get into the mobile industry here in the UK? I'd go for anything, either CLDC or CDC. BTW, I speak perfect (at least good enough for any job) Spanish and English.

Try hitting the websites of the major operators (Vodaphone, MMO2, T-Mobile, Virgin, Orange) and look for their career section. Apply directly.

SavaJe will soon be posting some job reqs for their Cambridge, UK office. Watch their site ( http://www.savaje.com ). I'll try to remember to post them here like the other 10 openings they have in Boston, MA, USA I just listed. If you don't mind doing Swing on cell phones... though I think the UK positions will be for some Bluetooth work.

Hi Fernando, I currently work in the mobile software company in London. What part of the industry in particular are you keen to be in? handsets, networks? Judging from your post, you are enthusiastic about device/handset work, which is what my company does. Symbian OS is currently all the rage in the UK, and that is written in c++, so a knowledge in that language is a must. We don't do any java here (yet), but there are plenty of companies that do. To find Symbian jobs, stick "symbian" into the search engine at jobserve.co.uk and see what appears. To find a (partial) list of companies that develop for handsets, go to Symbian.com and look at their partner list - there are some in there which do java only development. Alternatively, contact an agency. The market for embedded C/C++/Java has been quite strong here for a while, and I think you stand a good chance of getting a job - if you don't require a work permit.
