Hello all,
I am doing some advanced planning for future..
What is the range of salaries for a programmer(MS, Java ,whatever)?
and what are the living expenses like? What kinda salary could one live off on comfortable(for a single guy, with a little bit of recreation on the weekends).
any and all are thoughts would be much appreciated
Thank you

I am too moving to Bangalore next month. From the information I got,one BHK costs around Rs 2000 to 2500 p/m in subarbs.Actual town is expensive.Public transportation I heard is pathetic. You must have 2 wheeler or car.30 to 35K per month should be more than sufficient.
Ravish,You are in Bangalore right? Please share some information.

Thanks Capablanca.
I am in a bit of a tough situation.
I have got an offer in Bangalore, but the development is in ASP/Crystal Reports/MS technologies. I am a SCJP(since 2001), exp. mainly in Servlets/JSPs/JDBC. If the job were in Java, I think I could ask for 35K, but having very little experience in ASP, I wonder if I can expect more than 25K to start with. I am pretty sure I will catch up pretty quick and be equally productive.
I am in Malaysia, and I got another offer as a Java programmer, but that is mainly changing the front-end of some applications to JSP/Servlets, nothing too challanging. And it is tempting to come back to India for a while, be closer to friends, family, and just bask in the Indian sun for a while .
I am in a bit of a dilemma!!
I definately wont move to Bangalore if I cant be sure of atleast living comfortably.
Hoping that getting more information will help me decide what to do.

Also, can anybody from Bangalore tell us what 'Rustam Bagh Main Road' is like? apparantly, it is off Airport Road. Are there any appartments you can rent along there? what is the typical cost?
thanks!

Experience is also a big factor in deciding the compensation. 25k before tax is definitely not on the higher side. U can ask for lot more than that.
If you are looking for a decent 2 bedroom apt, u might have to shell out @ the minimum 6k+. Salaries are soaring in Bangalore and it s'dnt be that big a deal landing up with a good offer. If you are'nt married and dont have any issues as yet , then you will do great with 30k / month "in hand".
Look to get into some MNCs here since they pay the highest. Since you are into application programming, you might want to consider Accenture, Symphony, SAP, i2, Oracle , Cognizant, IFlex. All of them are recruiting.
Then ofcourse u have others. Wipro, Infy, IBM might make some fuss about salaries. Others dont care as long as you are good.

Thanks Karthik.
Every bit of information I can get helps. I too am a bit concerned about the taxes. From a little bit of looking up I have done, it seems I'll have to pay Rs19000 + 30000 for anything over 150000 pa. I need to factor that into my calculations as well.

Ravish,You are in Bangalore right? Please share some information.

Kepler You got me at right place .
First of all, in Bangalore it is very difficult to get one BHK (forget Mumbai).
Most of the time you will be getting 2 BHK.
Caution: When broker says 2 BHK, check the room size. Here 8 X 8 ft. room is also called bedroom
Good house you will get in around 5-8K (2BHK). When I say good, means where YOU can live .
Caution: most of the time they dont have parking space.
Check the water resources (Whether there is municipalty water OR there is borewell. Prefer borewell. In summer you might face water problem with municiplty water(refred as Kavery water)).
My married friends prefer appartments than independent house as there is more security and less worry(Regarding water, etc.).
In appts, you might have to pay maintenance charge some where betn Rs.500 - 1500/-.
So if you are getting appt then check whether maintenance charges are included in the rent or not.
In my previous company one guy was joining the company from Chinnai but he did not join after knowing the high cost of living in Bangalore.
NOTE: you have to give deposit which is generally 10 months of the rent. Most of the companies give you that amount or part of that amount. (if you are taking house of rent Rs. 10,000/-, you have to give 1L Rs. as deposit. ) [In Delhi you have to give only 2 months rent]
Regarding salary, if you have exp of 3-4 yrs then you can expect anything between 4-8 L/annum, depending upon company, your exp and their urgency.
'Rustam Bagh Main Road' :
You are right, its off the airport road, behind Manipal hospital.
Suppose to be a good posh area.
You can expect 2BHK in 7-10K.
But minus point is that in office hour, airport road is mess, too heavy trafic and its going to be like this for another 6-10 months till flyover is ready.
Depending upon area, in which your company is you can decide where to take your home.
As you are coming from abroad then you must be having some savings (sorry for generalising).
I will suggest you to buy a home which will cost you around 15L-25L. You can get home loan very easily and thats also at very low intrest rate. These days floating intrest rate is 7.75.
So instead of paying rent you can pay your EMI.
Happy house hunting
wishing that you already have a job.

Mantri builders appartment costs around somewhere 20-35L.
Currently developing area is HSR layout, which is almost near to all IT companies. [30-40 min drive and you are in office ]

Do you have any paticular reason for settling in B'lore only? ... I mean just as an option you can explore other cities also !!!
I worked in Pune for 3 yrs. and found it to be a nice place to settle and u have almost all the big companies like (Infy, wipro, tcs, IBM, Orbitech, cognizant, kanbay, EDS, mphasis etc.)or alternativelyyou can look for Noida, Gurgaon, Hyderabad too if you are not fussy about the climate.

or the problems (like pollution, traffic, high property rates etc.) popped-up only due to these thousands of companies ?

I have been in Pune too .. its also a nice city to live and settle.
Hyderabad, I heard that its good.
Personally I dont like Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida. [I dont like polution and high traffic cities.]
Chennai is also good option if you like sea beaches.

Now it depends....
If you ask me then I had some personal problems thats why I left Pune else there is no difference in Pune & Bangalore.
But if you want to move bangalore then do remember that cost of living is high in Bangalore. So while negotiating keep this thing in mind.
If you are in Pune, then if I am not wrong then you must be paying rent of 2-4K for 2-3 BHK.
Real estate in Bangalore if not more, then also not less than Bombay.
The only problem in Bangalore is that still Appartment culture is not here and the appartments which are coming up, most of them are luxary appartments with swimming pool, gym etc.

Please satisfy my curiosity. What is a BHK, and what are the monetary usits that people toss around so casually?

BHK - Bedroom Hall Kitchen.
This was covered in another post earlier in the year. I guess a BK would be a bedroom kitchen. A 2 BHK would be a 2 Bedroom Hall Kitchen.

Regarding salary, if you have exp of 3-4 yrs then you can expect anything between 4-8 L/annum,
4-8LRs/yr comes out to about USD$9-18K/year. Or the equivalent of about USD$4-9/hour.

Yeah, I had to learn this from my article. 1 Lakh is a unit of measure, equal to 100,000. I thought it was a million, and I overstated various companies' incomes by a factor of 10 .

Perhaps it might be useful to note that 4-8L Rs/yr gives the same standard of living in India as $50K-$90K per year in the US

If you are in Pune and njoyed your stay out there and planing to move, then B'lore is only option you have (in general) !!!
I didn't realised that while making a change and repented later !!
B'lore is good esp. if you like visiting pubs (still remember purplehaze and something like Gazzalers ) and watching international rock stars (Floyd, scorpians, Deep purple to nme few ) playing live music !!!

Then Pune is much better than B'lore.
In Bangalore there is no night life. When I say Night life, then it menas life after 12pm.
I still remember Pyasa in Pune.
And it seems that I getting old as now these days I prefer going to bars than pubs. Now cant bear loud music.

I am in Dhaka, Bangladesh - neighbour country of India. Should I have a quick visit to Bangalore in an IT fair and realize the situation from my own eyes? I am looking forward to better career scope in IT.
