passing from jstl TO jsp

I am stuck using a taglib that won't let me use jstl in setting attributes.
<oui :p ostfield name="gid" value="<x ut select="$game/game/tableid"/>" />
<postfield name="gid" value="<x ut select="$game/game/tableid"/>" />
(i.e. no interpretation).
Now, if I happen to have what I need in a jsp variable, I can do the following:
<oui :p ostfield name="gid" value="<%=someVariable>" />
So the question is (and I can't find an answer in my reference books!) how can I pass FROM jstl UP to jsp. I want to do something like this:
<% String t = "%><x ut select="$game/game/tableid"/><%";%>
Which obviously doesn't work, but you get the idea.

Hint: when posting a topic that has lots of colons ( in it, it's best to click the 'disable smilies' near the bottom of the edit page. I went ahead and disabled smilies in your post, but it's still kinda whacked.
You might want to edit your post, re-enter the code, and be sure that smilies are disabled.

P.S. And be sure to enclose your code in the UBB code tags. That way, the formatting will be preserved as well.
I agree. Here's the link:
