JSF Validation

Do the validation Components in JSF use the Jakarta Validation framework, or has Sun created it's own implementation for validation?
Also, is the validation client side or server side? What I mean is, when I add the validation tags to the UIComponents in the HTML page, does that get rendered to Javascript or does the request go back to the server for validation?

JSF does not use the commons-validation.jar as far as I know.
The validation is server side in the RI but its easy enough to imagine an implementation that makes JavaScript for client side validation.
Hope this helps.
