Generaly what purpose the people uses their own tags(JSTL) as part of their projects

The JSTL is not the same as "their own tags". I believe that you are confusing custom tags with the JSTL set of tags.

- for clear and readable JSP code
- to avoid Java in JSPs
- easy to understand and use

Use Custom Tags:

- when you need some customize functionality
