First of all I dont know whether I am posting the query at the right forum, but I would like to ask you all for a small help.I am still in the starting stage of Learning JSP,Servlets,Struts.I just need some sample projects which I can practice on to get a good knowledge on the Subject. Any pointers would be of Great Help....really of great help

I dont need to do any homework or am not a Student.... just want to practice more on these topics.

Thanks in Advance,

First, I would drop Struts from the list. I highly recommend getting the basics of JSP and Servlets technology under your belt before delving off into frameworks.

Find a good book (Head First JSP and Servlets comes highly recommended) and start wading through...

Hi Bear,
First of all I am thankful to you for helping me. But the point here is not that of Learning. I have a fair idea (theoretically) about Java,JSP,Servlets and Struts. But the point here is that I havent done much practical work on those. Though I have done some sample examples to have concrete Idea on the Basics , I would like to do a project as a whole so as to get a feel of the production enviornment and its restrictions.

I hope that you got my query,

Thanks in Advance

So you are just looking for project ideas? Or existing open source projects to join?

Online store/shopping cart is always a good topic for jsp, servlet and struts project. There are a lot of examples, especially in jsp book, but they are incomplete. You can google or yahoo a tons of examples.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply. The Shopping Cart example was done while I was learning the Subject itself. Actually the point is..I dont have any work right now...so rather than sitting idle, i thought of doing some sample project. I googled it... but found no satisfactory project ideas...

There is no perfect and complete example for online store free example, even in the jsp books. Otherwise, many software solution provider company will be out of business. I remember there is a thread for discussing Java Shopping Cart in another forum in recent days. You can take this as a reference.

http://www.coderanch.com/t/60052/oa/Java-Shopping-Cart

Usually, online store consists of several components :
- Product catalog, displays products for a company.
- Shopping Cart, let customer to manage those selected products including payment
- Back Office, let owner to manage products, online orders and print reports

I think other ranchers can give your more constructive advice.

A couple suggestions:

1.)
Go to http://sourceforge.net/index.php.
There are plenty of open source projects out there, in various stages
of completion. Many are seeking developers who are willing to lend a
hand.

2.)
Volunteer some of your time to a cause that you think is worthy.
As an example, a few years ago, my daughter got involved with a
children's community theater program. They were a non-profit.
Their schedules were sheets of paper and they had to call everyone
if there was a change or cancellation.
I built an online calendar/photo album app for them.
They made out and were very grateful, I got a chance to work with a
new technology, and everyone was happy.
As an added bonus, it gave me something to show prospective clients
when looking for freelance work. Most of the work we do as
professionals can't be shown due to non-disclosure clauses in our
contracts.
