I'm planning on taking time out to travel and work abroad. As a UK citizen, the two places really open to me for work are Australia and Canada. Before I decide which to go to I was hoping to get some info on the job market at these places.

Does anyone have any information on what the demand is like for Java developers there ? What are the hot & cold spots ? What are the rates of pay like ?

I'm looking for Java jobs, probably in an investment bank and probably contracting. I am currently 26, have 5 years experience working with Java in investments banks. I also have a 1st class computing degree.

any info appreciated,
thanks, D.

Most of those jobs in Canada are in downtown Toronto.

Job market in Australia specially Sydney is really good these days for Jave/J2EE developers. I managed to find a job within 3 weeks of migrating to Australia. Job agents say that there is a shortage of skilled java/j2ee developers in Sydney.

I wouldn't quite say 'shortage', but the market is certainly up in the last 6 months. Sydney is doing well, Perth (where I am) is moving along nicely, and even Melbourne appears to be picking up. I believe Melbourne was hit worst by the fall in the IT industry.

Bonza ! Sounds much better than I was expecting (I did a search on this forum and found some fairly negative comments). Now I can't wait to go !

thanks all, D.

hi
are the job positions in Sydney including lots of java ones?
and do most of those jobs require lots of experience and high qualification?
how about the chance of survival for some1 with little IT experience but degree qualified in Sydney?
what sources do you use to search for jobs in sydney? like seek and monster or newspaper?
