Take a look at the server logs. Status 500 errors are very generic and not easy to diagnose.

could not find much about it.

The following is the structure of the application
D:\xyz\external\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.27\webapps\ROOT\abc\file.jsp.

From file.jsp I instantiate a class located in D:\xyz\external\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.27\shared\lib\abc.jar

I tried looking into the application logs it says that Servlet.service() threw this exception. Can you tell me which specific logs to look at seeing the directory structure if this doesnot help?

This is a generic Exception. For more details, check your server logs: stderr.log, stdout.log and the host specific log.

E.g.
In you server.xml the logger for your host is:

then your host-specific log should be something like localhost_log.2007-02-18.txt

Post the relevant stack trace here so we can help.
