It depends.

Full-time or Part-time? Do you have previous industry experience or are you doing M.S. straight from B.S. ?

If you have years of industry experience and doing M.S on part-time basis while maintaining full-time job, I don't think it really matter much what school you choose.

However, if you have little experience and do not currently have full-time job, then you'd better go to school that has "reputation" and have good "career center". Otherwise, you'd have difficult time securing a position after getting the M.S.

In this regard, I'd rate Columbia University and New York University as top tiers in NYC area.

Better yet, if you're willing to commute to central NJ, then Princeton University is the best choice.

Columbia University or New York University ?

In fact, neither is the best schools nationwide.

But if you have to choose school in NYC area locally, both of them are decent schools. Personally, I'd rate Columbia a bit higher than NYU.

I disagree. Princeton, while a top undergraduate university, is not known for much in the way of graduate programs--with only a few notable exceptions, like physics and economics. They have been strong is CS, too, but thy are academically oriented. (If you wanted to get a PhD and teach, I'd highly recommend them.) It was only recently that they added a masters in engineering, so the degree itself is not well proven, and not quite on target with their traditional competancy.
