It suggests that the poster is swearing about something because they're so mad. Is that what you thought it meant? Anyone old enough to be posting on JavaRanch is aware of the fact that people get angry and say bad words sometimes. Although we do try to avoid offending people, I think what you're suggesting is somewhat extreme.

Now, the one, and the one -- those are so terribly overused that I'd love to see them go.

It implies to me that the target of said smilie is wasting the time of the person that posted the smilie or that the question being asked or statement being said is, well, dumb. When in fact, there are no dumb questions here on Javaranch.

When someone uses that smilie on me, I don't think it's nice.

As long as isn't being used in the following manner:

YOU! or YOU STUPID

then I don't have a problem with it. I typically use it in those DOH situations where I should have known the answer and I am at myself.

Gregg, I think maybe you may have overlooked a few posts made here over the years.

I do agree that :roll: is often used in a negative way against others, and that can be a problem. I've certainly used it that way myself in some conversations, and I probably shouldn't have. But I don't think the abuses are enough of a problem to warrant banning it.

As for stuff like and - well they can certainly be overused. Particularly the latter. But at least they seem to contribute tot the "friendly place for greenhorns" idea. When I see posts with

What annoys me most about some smilies is the constant motion. I find it quite distracting when reading something if I can see out of the corner of my eye a coloured blob jumping up and down or sticking its tongue at me.

A few smilies, in moderation, such as and can help to clarify the meaning of a message. Sometimes a well placed wink can be the difference between a comment appearing to be a stressed rant and appearing to be a tongue-in-cheek joke.

On the other hand there are posts along the lines of

i agree u r rite

which are the textual equivalent of trying to listen to fourteen radio stations at once and attempt to pick out the one that you are interested in.
