hi

what kind of work is exactly going in honeywell ,bangalore(HTSL).Is it a pure software company?. Some of my friends are suggesting that it is an electronics/instrumentation company. Is it wise for a B.Tech COMPUTER SCIENCE graduate to start his career with this company?

thanks in advance

dei siddarth,

are u placed in amdocs or honeywell? anyway, as for ur query, honeywell is an instrumentation based company and there is no scope there for software engineers. But amdocs, is seeking a major expansion drive in india and they are going to shift their high end devt work to the pune center as well. so, now u should be knowing which is better!!!

Even though Honeywell is electronics/instrumentation related company, in Indian center they do software development. So I feel companies like Honeywell give a good scope to learn about software. Not only Honeywell other companies like CISCO, Lucent, Texas Instruments will give very good scope to hone your skills. But in this companies you may not be working the new technologies like J2EE etc., but you will be using the power of core java, c, c++.

Just I give you a example. Take MBT and CISCO, both are doing telecom related projects/products. But the diffence is MBT will be working on billing related projects, where as CISCO will be doing product development related telecom and networking. For this products they may not using J2EE but they will be using the power of Core Java, C, C++. New languages, things will be found by such companies. Another example Bell Labs is a telecom company, but to make their telecom instruments powerful they found C, UNIX and thats the where software development boom started.

dei siddarth,

This is a public forum not our college forum. We may be class mates but this is not the way to reply in a public forum. Please maintain the decorum of this forum.

are u placed in amdocs or honeywell?

As you know i'm placed in both.I need to make a choice between the two.

Anyway thanks for your valuable suggestion.

Honeywell may be an electronics/instrumentation company. But I want to know whether it is good for a computer science graduate to start his career with such companies. Can i switch easily to other software companies later (if necessary) or my options sealed?

Siddharth,
As an employee of Honeywell, im bit ..not.. a byte happy in honeywell.

Its core nature may be in Avionics and Instrumentaion but in HTSL, they are providing software solutions.

I too heared about Amdocs since from 2002, when they came to our college for campus recriutment. After offering(in $'s), due to recession none of the candidates where inducted. They where recurited directly for Amdocs, Cyprus.

In honeywell you can have Job Security, better work culture, visibility.
Can i switch easily to other software companies later (if necessary) or my options sealed?

This you can do form any company

People with electronics experience(my friend who worked in ISRO, no software experience)able to switch jobs in software industry. So if you work companies like Honeywell you can jump to any other company.

Siddarth,
I am working @ honeywell. You need not have any inhibitions on joining there from a computer background. I am also a computer graduate and have been working on software with C/C++. It is really good. You can also have good exposure if you wish to switch.
