There are 4 categories of drivers viz.jdbc-odbc bridge driver,Native API...,Net Protocol...,Native Protocol..

The first type uses ODBC as the intermediate. In this jdbc relies on the ODBC for the connections.
The second form, the type two uses the drivers of the respective databases directly. Example the MYSQL and Oracle Drivers

The third one is pure java driver that uses networking protocol and the middle ware to communicate with a server. The server translates the protocol to the DBMS specific function calls.
The fourth on uses JAVA to implement DBMS vendor networking protocol such as ORACLE with no client installation or configuratin unlike the type type where it is required.
