What about Adabase D? It comes with Sun's StarOffice. I'm not sure what the licensing agreement says on distribution, but I'm know how you can find out...

"mp_sathya",
The Java Ranch has thousands of visitors every week, many with surprisingly similar names. To avoid confusion we have a naming convention, described at http://www.javaranch.com/name.jsp . We require names to have at least two words, separated by a space, and strongly recommend that you use your full real name. Please choose a new name which meets the requirements.
Thanks.

You'd probably be better asking this question in the JDBC forum. All the Java database experts hang ouut there, so I've moved this post.

If you have ODBC on your machine...
You do not need a DATABASE to develop and test you JAVA/JDBC code.
Define your ODBC User Data Source Name as a MS Text File.
By default tables will be created you current dir.
ie.
String url = "jdbc dbc:textDB";
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
Hope this helps...
