SQLException with IE, MySQL, and JDBC

Whenever I build a java applet that accesses a MySQL DB, I receive an error from Internet Explorer that says it cannot find the MySQL server. I am running the db from the same machine as the applet and I receive no errors when I use the appletviewer or Netscape. If anyone has experience with this problem, please help.
Thanks so much in advance,
