Hi,
I have Java, Allaire JRun, Oracle 8i installed on my windows 98 PC.
Can someone suggest a project in EJB, Servlets & oracle that can help me build a portfolio to enter in the job market.
Regards,
Vishakha.

Wow, you've got a lot of biggies installed in there. What is your general knowledge of Java? Jumping straight into EJBs may not be the smartest thing to do and you'll probably waste more time trying to learn J2EE if you don't take it step by step.
So for others and myself to answer your question, what is your background with Java? Have you done servlets/JSPs before and you need a project to enhance your skills? Or is this the first time you'll be stepping into J2EE?
I hope to hear from you.

create a project for a friend. Find someone who owns there own business who might be interested expanding their business online. Start right from the Systems requirements --> Object modeling --> implementation. This way you have a happy client, work experience, a sense of achievement, and confidence in your abilities. If you don't know anyone, look to charities, not for profit organizations or local religious institutions.

Hi Stanley,
I'm a SCJP2 currently preparing for SCJEA. I've done servlets in training and i'm very clear with concepts of EJB thru self study but haven't had a chance to practise because I didn't have access to EJB server/database. So i installed JRun and Oracle but i don't know where to start. I also have some knowledge of J2EE in respect to preparing for part 1 of exam.
Hi Jamie,
Thankyou for your suggestion, but since I haven't done a complete project before i would need some assistance at each step.
Anyway, I'm open to suggestions :
Regards,
Vishakha.

By the way Stanley, I forgot to mention that I've done a small academic project using Visual Basic and Oracle

I would agree with Jamie. Do work for a non-profit organization or charity to build up your resume. Though, however, it might be difficult to use EJBs for a non-profit org since it would probably be overkill.
Why not try building an e-commerce site? It should be complete with inventory and the such.

Hi Vishaka
I might sound completely offtrack. But first you think and decide urself whether you wanna continue in Visual Basic and Oracle or come into Java field. I would suggest that since you dont have a project and have some project experience better locate some clients as Jamie has said and do some project for them. Then you have two project experiences in Visual Basic and Oracle which is pretty cool and start applying for Jobs. Well if you really wanna shift to Visual Basic then you need to learn COM a bit. For that the best book is Dan Appelman's Developing COM components.
The onus is on you. Becoz we are facing the music now after working in java for years.. Well my self i have shifted to SQL Server after waiting for a java project. In the present scenario better to continue with what you know and try in that area rather than trying for java.
