Uncommon Exception

Howdy all!
Recently I have been working with connecting to a database that is outside this network (on a different server). I thought that I would be smooth and just make a System DSN for it. With the windows odbc manager, I set it all up. Now when I try to connect to it, I get the following error:
java.sql.SQLException: [Sybase][ODBC Driver]Unable to connect to database server: database engine not running has occurred during connection
Does any one have any suggestions on this topic.
Do I have to manualy start the database on the remote machine? Should I go about it differently?
Thanks in advance

looks like your database may be in shutdown mode. Can you access the database via a SQL Editor on a remote machine? Use the same connection information when you log on to the database via the SQL Editor as you would when you connect via java.

Thanks for the tips. I tried to use the databse through an isql (Sybase), but it gave the results: Could not find database.
Does that mean that it is the database...or is it something else?
Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree...
What I am doing is trying to accesses a database that is either somewhere on the network or somewhere that is off the network. Does anybody have any code/suggestions that may accomplish this great challange...thanks

don't worry about your program not connecting remotely until you can connect remotely using a SQL Editor(with the same connection parameters).
