I am a java beginner......and intend to take java certification......is knowledge of c and c++ a prerequisite to learn java

It is not a prerequisite. But if you know it definitely helps.
Having said that, I would like to add that understanding Object oriented methodology is more useful in learning Java than knowing C++.
