Adding Time.......

Hello All,
Just wonder how to go about adding a time period (e.g 8 hours) to a query results.
The date is in the format 2/21/02 1:25:33PM, but for some reason it a VARCHAR data type!!!
I'm reading this from a Sybase database and putting the result into Access.
Any help appreciated.
