Insert/update TEXT field in SYBASE?

I am using JSP's to communicate with Sybase 12. I need to insert/update a text field in Sybase. My dba says that a sybase stored procedure cannot accept a String that is longer than 255 characters as an input parameter. Can anyone help me figure out how to insert/update a Sybase text field from my Java Bean?

Some more or less related words..
New in Sybase ASE 12.5 is that a varchar column can contain more than 255 bytes of data.
I don't know if a stored procedure can handle an input parameter of over 255 characters in 12.5, but it's possible.
But upgrading to 12.5 may not be a thing your company plans to do..
