General Database Question

Hi all. I've just started to look at java and jdbc and I'm wondering . . . .
If Java is object oriented and we can use it to write to databases with jdbc, are there any object oriented databases out there? If so does anybody know a good place to begin learning about them?
Or am I stuck dividing my objects into constituent parts to send / store them in databases?

Fun programming etcetera!
