amount of text - performance

If I insert a large amount of text into a column of varchar data type in a table, will this affect the performance of the database (DB2 UDB)?

at insert time there is not problem for performance .While retreiving time only it may affect performance affect .but not sure its depends upon the memory leaks may be server or databse etc...
