One of my friends has spent about 4.5 years in a small sized company and is keen to move into big brand. He want to make that change asap but since he entitled to some big bonus after 6 months, there is thought to wait for six months. Considering the market conditions there are opportunities now available, is it worthwhile to wait for six months or make that change now without giving too much thought abt money.

He has close to 7 years of experience.

I didnt understand that what you means by "One of my friends has spent about 4.5 hrs in a small sized company"? I feel if your friend can benifited the big bonus by changing company then he can go ahead. Other wise as it is big money he better to wait still 6 months. In 6 months the IT job market may change but as your friend is having good experience it may not difficult for him to find the job in tough situations also.

Stay with small company especially client based company because they pay more and their increaments and bonuses are good. Once you move you ass into big consulting corporation, you will be stuck with 3% raise and 4% bonus. Avoid temptation of big name and concentrate on big money.

This biggest disadvantage of statying in small company is, when you try to switch over to any of the big software giant's they will not consider your experience, becoz generally these company always ask about the experince in CMMi or ISO Companies. The 7 yrs of exp. will be treated as 2 yrs if you go for a big brand.

I guess you need to change your name as per Javaranch naming policy.

And it is not true that the experience in small companies will be treated as less experience. I worked both for small and big companies. I didnt face any problem.

I aggree with this usually small companies experience is not counted,a one year experience in a CMM level or ISO company would put a lot more weightage than 3-4 years experience in small company which is not CMM or ISO company ,even if you have done some good projects in small company ,because brand name counts........
I have seen people with 2 yrs experinece in big companies are paid more than people who have 4-5 years in small companies.
