JDBC and Transaction Management

How does JDBC handle Transaction Management for heavy-loads and complex transactions ?
Would you need additional API's for this ?
Have there been new advances also in locking and deadlock detection and prevention or do the previous rules still apply.
Are distributed deadlock even rarer than deadlocks ?
