There is no limit to the number of statements that can be created from a Connection

yes there are, but it is driver implementation specific. Some MSAccess ODBC drivers allow only one statement per connection, while the Oracle thin drivers allow unlimited Connections that are bound only by the maximum number of processes in the init.ora file. Check your database driver documentation for details on maximum connections to your database.

The JDBC-ODBC bridge is limited to one Statement per Connection, per the JDBC FAQ.
