1. how does one know which jdbc driver is being used.
i.e. type 1 type 2,type 3 or type 4

2. And the version of jdbc.

Glenny,
The driver tells you. If you are using an application server, it is in the server logs. If not, check the driver documentation.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
