Newbie encounters table locking

This is a JDBC newbie question. Where is a good description of locking tables & access with JDBC? I am using JDBC/ODBC with MS Access. I get the run-time error when doing a select statement for a join:
SQLException ... [ODBC MS Access Driver]
The database engine could not lock table 'college' because it is already in use by another person or process.

I need to have access to the tables in my database -- I am not concerned at present with controlling access.

I am just trying to do normal table creation, update & display.

Thanks

OK, found the problem. I just needed to find the magic setAutoCommit method. The courseware I am using and the other sources I consulted didn't talk about committing data.
