java.sql.SQLException: Communication failure during handshake. Is there a server running on localhost:3306?

what is this error pals?

Looks like your MySQL server is not running.

I think it sounds like a Driver problem, you'd get a connection refused error otherwise. Do you have the most up to date drivers?

I am using mysql server version 4.1 The server is running.I dont think it is the driver problem because, another application with the same driver works!!!What could be the problem??

Maybe because of a firewall you may not be getting through. Try disabling any firewall you use(if any).
